ウィプロは1945年、インドのカルナータカ州バンガロールにて設立された。
今でこそSWITCHと呼ばれるインドの６大IT企業(サティヤム・コンピュータ・サービス、ウィプロ、インフォシス・テクノロジーズ、タタ・コンサルタンシー・サービシズ、コグニザント・テクノロジー・ソリューションズ、HCLテクノロジーズの6社。)の一角を占めるワールドワイドなグローバル企業であるが、設立当初は主に食用油などの生産を行う会社だった。
倒産寸前だった会社を父親から引き継いだ現会長のアジム・プレムジ（Azim Premji）が、経営学を学んで会社を立て直し、1981年よりIT業界に参入。
オフショア開発を柱に事業を拡大し、いまの巨大企業の礎を築いた。

ウィプロは顧客企業への「Do Business Better」を掲げ、ITサービス、コンサルティング、アウトソーシングなどを統合したグローバルなデリバリー・システムによって、あらゆるIT分野をカバーし、ビジネスソリューションを提供するプロバイダである。
現在は世界57カ国に開発やサービスの拠点を設け、14万以上の従業員が事業に従事している。

具体的なアクションとしては、特に教育の拡充・普及に力を入れており、この10年間でインドの重要な30の教育機関とパートナー・ネットワークを構築、インド17州において、延べ80万人の生徒に対し、2000の学校、10,500人の教師と共に教育活動を展開、2007年からはウィプロ・エデュケーション・フェローシップによる援助などを行い、現在も22のパートナーと共に国中の700の学校とプロジェクト展開を計画している。

他にもエンジニア志望の学生の雇用促進を図るプロジェクト「Mission10X」や、自社の環境への影響度をチェックする「eco eye」、子供や大学生を対象に、持続可能な社会実現のための思想や行動を促すための「earthian」プロジェクトなども展開している。
